This week, Tyler Perry took to Twitter to make a major television announcement!
That’s right! It looks like Oprah has sprinkled more of her fairy dust on Tyler and he will be taking on a new role as a talk show host extraordinaire.
The writer/director/producer/playwright/actor will now be adding talk show host to his long list of titles, thanks to his major success on the Oprah Winfrey Network during the past year. It has been less than a month since Oprah and Tyler announced their first television projects on OWN: The Haves and The Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor. The two have fast become OWN’s highest-rated series debut ever, which led to the network doubling the series, and ending season 1 as the most-watched scripted telecast on OWN ever with 2 million viewers. Love Thy Neighbor fell right behind in second place in terms of debut viewership, which is why we weren’t totally surprised when Oprah announced a third series from TP: “Single Mom’s Club,” based on the feature film by the same name hitting theaters in March.
Oprah aside, this move by Tyler Perry marks a significant moment in television, as he will be the fifth African-American talkshow host currently on air when he debuts, joining Queen Latifah, Wendy Williams, Arsenio Hall and Steve Harvey! Talk about a breakthrough. Never before has the landscape been so diverse and so saturated with talent. It will be interesting to see what Tyler brings to the table that is different from the others.
